Two lonely people walk into a seedy Bronx bar. They end up in the same bed. Written in 1983 by John Patrick Shanley—years before he won an Academy Award for Moonstruck, a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony for Doubt—the play explores the unexpected tenderness that flickers between two outcasts: Danny, a brooding and violent truck driver, and Roberta, a depressed recent divorcée. Through shared sadness and endless talking, they find solace. The following morning, when the closeness of the night must face daytime and its strains, the temporary companionship turns into more heartbreak.
