Sri Lanka, 1983: Radha decides to flee her country with her unborn child, seeing no hope amid the violent national conflict. Australia, 2004: Siddhartha, Radha’s son, falls in love with Lily at a university in New South Wales. He knows little of his family’s background until receiving a call that changes what he knows about himself, his roots, and the world. S. Shakthidharan’s Counting and Cracking, set in two town halls, transports the audience across time and space. We meet 19 characters from multiple generations, including Radha’s parents and grandparents, and Siddhartha’s father. Following productions in Australia and the U.K., this family saga, directed by Eamon Flack, now has its U.S. premiere. —Jeanne Malle
