Costume at the National Theatre

Nov 2, 2019 – June 27, 2020
Upper Ground, South Bank, London SE1 9PX, UK

“Costume is one of the first things we see on stage, telling us immediately about the world of the show we are about to watch,” explains Aoife Monks, the curator of costume at the National Theatre. Featuring pieces from Antony and Cleopatra, War Horse, Follies, and more, the exhibition visits each stage of the process, from design to construction, sourcing to alterations, repairs to laundering. Each year, the National Theatre stages more than 20 new productions, while its costume-hire department—a team of 46 people—offers apparel from its stock of 70,000 pieces to films, photoshoots, and other theater productions. Muddy uniforms, giant caterpillars, it’s all part of the exhibition. —B.A.
