It’s often referred to as “modest fashion,” which somehow makes it sound bland, but the inventive and often splendid designs created for Muslim women are a coming fashion phenomenon. This exhibition, which originated at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, is not a history, it’s a current snapshot of the range this subject covers. And “covers” is the word. For yes, the themes are drape and wrap and veil, from burqa to hijab to niqab. But oh what eye-popping variations on these themes! —L.J.
