Cliveden House, a five-star country-house hotel in Berkshire, west of London, recently made news when Meghan Markle stayed there the night before her wedding to Prince Harry. More importantly, the estate has a long literary history—since 1666 it’s been home to an ongoing literary salon—and it now hosts a literary festival. This year’s, the third, features prominent authors Alain de Botton (giving a talk on “Emotional Education,”) Leila Slimani (discussing the “Art of the Novel”), and Ian McEwan (assaying the machine age, the subject of his latest novel, Machines Like Me). Bizarrely, Jacob Rees-Mogg, leader of the U.K. House of Commons and author of The Victorians, a recently published and heavily ridiculed history, is also on the line-up. —J.V.
