Cindy Sherman

“Inconsiderate, rude behavior drives me nuts,” the photographer and filmmaker Cindy Sherman has said. “And I guess the inconsiderate rudeness of social ineptitude definitely fuels my work.” One such form of social ineptitude is sexism, and Sherman has long been interested in challenging traditional views on femininity, identity, and female representation. In this 10-photograph series she toys with androgyny, dressing in men’s clothes and aiming her “male” gaze into our eyes. —E.C.
