Catherine Opie: Rhetorical Landscapes

July 16 – Sept 26, 2020
501 W 24th Street New York, NY 10011

“I’m a complete supporter of Obama,” explains the renowned American photographer Catherine Opie, “and kind of in love with him.” Opie is no fan of the Trump administration, and in recent years she has looked upon the president’s disregard for the environment with growing consternation. Famous for her quintessentially American portraits, Opie responds with a one-two punch. “Rhetorical Landscapes” is comprised of majestic photographs of the Okefenokee swamps—a haunting realm, now endangered, found in southern Georgia and northern Florida—and digital collages that address the politics of landscape. —E.C.
