BODYTRAFFIC

A moment from Matthew Neenan’s I Forgot the Start.

Every few years for the last decade, another article in the national press proclaims the Los Angeles dance scene on the cusp. For BODYTRAFFIC, it may actually be true. Last fall, the eight-member repertory troupe appointed indie choreographer Trey McIntyre as its resident dancemaker-cum-advisor. Having inaugurated an eponymous troupe in Idaho, of all places, then had it thrive, the man knows how to get heretofore nonexistent audiences to materialize. Plus, his unassuming Gen X aesthetic—which manages to be both relaxed about its medium and ardent about its specific, off-kilter, humane concerns—should particularly appeal to West Coasters. For this 2025 tour, a McIntyre premiere shares the bill with recent works by the likeminded Matthew Neenan, BalletX cofounder, and the Ronald K. Brown alum Juel D. Lane. —Apollinaire Scherr
