Baryshnikov Arts Center: Vibhanga

Feb 1 – May 31, 2021
450 W 37th St, #501, New York, NY 10018, United States

Artists have always had to do workarounds. The Italian censors were a continuing pain for Verdi. Soviet artists had to deal with political agendas that mandated happy endings. George Balanchine’s newborn New York City Ballet dealt with puny budgets by costuming ballets in cheap leotards rather than expensive tutus. During the pandemic, artists have looked to the Internet. The Baryshnikov Arts Center, which is dedicated to experimentation, has commissioned seven video works for a digital winter season. The first debuts on February 1—Bijayini Satpathy’s Vibhanga, inspired by classical Indian dance—and programming continues into May (17 to 31) with Tei Blow’s The Sprezzaturameron, a futuristic take on artists.
