The leading role of Charlotte Andergast, a concert pianist whose career choices have cost her nearest and dearest a lot, originally fell to Ingrid Bergman. In the opera, she is played by the seasoned Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, a singing actress of top caliber. Given the medium, it might have seemed “natural” to change Charlotte into an opera star. But no, she’s still a pianist. —M.G.
