To write Appropriate, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins “would steal something from every play that I liked” and “cook the pot to see what happens.” Culling from works by Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neill, and Sam Shepard, among many others, his family drama focuses on the Lafayette siblings, who reunite after their father’s death—begrudgingly—to auction off his Arkansas plantation house. Tensions deepen when they discover a family photo album holding images of lynchings on the plantation. The play, which premiered in 2014, is back up at 2nd Stage. Lila Neugebauer directs.
