When Anselm Kiefer was a young man he devoured James Joyce. First he read Ulysses, then he embarked on a slower journey through the more difficult Finnegans Wake. In the years since its publication, Joyce’s 1939 novel has been criticized as unintelligible and full of contradictions. For this exhibition, Kiefer has created paintings, sculptures, and installations that respond to the book. —Elena Clavarino
