“I am interested in what escapes me,” the Belgian installation artist Ann Veronica Janssens has said, “not in order to arrest it, but, on the contrary, in order to experiment with the ‘ungraspable.”’ In her work, Janssens often undermines the concept of materiality, rarely offering expression that is embodied in an object. Instead she plays with the ephemeral: light, sound, artificial mist and color. She seems to ask, What is an aesthetic experience? In the first half of this exhibition, a pool of reflective blue glitter is sprinkled across the cold floor of the gallery. In the second half, bicycles with mirrored wheels are available for a spin. Light bounces off the white-washed walls—flashes and reflections, art that is always escaping. —E.C.
