Very few Eastern European synagogues survived the Nazis. The interlocking geometries of these wooden structures, however, live on in Frank Stella’s Polish Village series. Inspired by the 1959 book Wooden Synagogues—a survey containing photos and floor plans of lost buildings—Stella constructed over 100 abstract, mixed-media reliefs, and named each after a place of worship now gone. The series, made from 1970 to 1974, marks Stella’s first experimentations with the third dimension. This is greater China’s first Stella exhibition. —C.J.F.
