Alexander Girard: A Designer's Universe

May 5 – Oct 27, 2019
On Museum Hill, 706 Camino Lejo, Santa Fe, NM 87505, USA

You’ve seen the work of 20th-century designer Alexander Girard, though you may not have put his name to it. A Pennsylvania Dutch version of Modernism; folk art rhythms clothed in Pop Art colors—that’s Girard. Unbelievably, this is the first major retrospective of his work. Girard’s relationships with contemporaries Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Andy Warhol, and Rudi Gernreich are explored, along with his designs in textiles, furniture, sculpture, sketches, drawings, and collages never before exhibited. —L.J.
