Dreams: The Many Lives of Fleetwood Mac Hardcover – October 1, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Fleetwood Mac has had a ground-breaking career spanning over fifty years and includes some of the best-selling albums and greatest hits of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. But the band's unique story is one of enormous triumph and also deep tragedy. There has never been a band in the history of music riven with as much romantic drama, sexual tension, and incredible highs and lows as Fleetwood Mac.
Dreams is a must-read for casual Fleetwood Mac fans and die-hard devotees alike. Presenting mini-biographies, observations, and essays, Mark Blake explores all eras of the Fleetwood Mac story to explore what it is that has made them one of the most successful bands in history.
Blake draws on his own exclusive interviews with Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and the late Peter Green and Christine McVie, and addresses the complex human drama at the heart of the Fleetwood Mac story, including the complicated relationships between the band's main members, but he also dives deep into the towering discography that the band has built over the past half-century.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Dreams delves into Fleetwood Mac’s storied past and the enduring appeal of the band’s music. Many musicians passed through the revolving door that led to the formation and collapse of the various Fleetwood Macs. Blake will guide you through all the hirings and firings, the couplings and uncouplings, the rivers of liquor and mountains of cocaine that went down throats and up noses, with plentiful stops along the way at the studios where the magic happened.” -- The Washington Post
"Affairs, of course, abound, the most famous being between Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and it is fair to say that tumult both produced memorable music and exploded the group. If you are a Fleetwood Mac fan, then Dreams will satisfy every ounce of your passion." -- Air Mail
“A kaleidoscopic chronicle of one of rock’s most fabled groups. In loose, episodic sections drawing on interviews with bandmembers, Blake analyzes the makings of their famous and lesser-known songs; dissects their romantic rivalries; and traces the destructive effects of the rock and roll lifestyle. It’s a colorful account of a fascinating chapter in rock history.” -- Publishers Weekly
“An excellent history.” -- The Guardian
"Dreams is the perfect guide to the decades of dysfunction, drama and dreaming that underpinned the labyrinthine soap opera of Fleetwood Mac. It is an engrossing, eye-opening window into the whirlwind world of 1970s rock, when life was both innocent and debauched and painful, failing relationships could produce timeless, laid-back musical perfection." -- John Higgs, author of Love and Let Die: James Bond, the Beatles, and the British Psyche
"Fleetwood Mac’s songs are about many things, but inner turmoil and broken relationships top the list. Based on original interviews and eyewitness accounts, Blake's chronicle charts the band’s journeys from London to California, from British blues to West Coast rock while also discussing individual albums and songs. In this fun and eccentric account of an eccentric rock band, Blake helps readers understand how a clash of egos and cultures generated music that survived all the drama and continues to find new fans today." -- Booklist
“A refreshing approach, highlighting oblique connections, odd legacies and echoes. Blake undertakes a thorough journey around Fleetwood Mac and their turbulent personalities. An entertaining unpicking of rocks most tangled webs.” -- MOJO Magazine

- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2025I have of course loved their music since the early days. And lucky to have met the Future Games crew at rehearsals and after shows courtesy of my old friend Bob Welch. I was especially curious to read how Bob's legacy would be conveyed. For the most part it was fair and positive.
However I still don't understand how he wasn't included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Fleetwood Mac. Bob didn't either. Apparently only Mick and Jan Wenner know and they aren't talking.
Overall interesting in depth read
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2024I liked many things about this book. Using short chapters to cover discreet people/episodes is an unusual and fun way of storytelling. However, there was tremendous redundancy in the various chapters. It reads as if separate authors wrote the various chapters and no editor checked for the redundancies and repetitions. I still recommend this book, but the lack of a firm red pen significantly hurt the end product.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2024Book was a Christmas gift. Bottom of pages towards end of book were cut off 1/4".
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2024This is a largely well-written book about the different incarnations of Fleetwood Mac. Given the many people that have drifted in and out of the group and the fact that they didn't stop existing when they left, the style of many short vignettes actually works quite well. That said, there are some factual errors, including songs attributed to the wrong albums, and at times the writer seems to take some pot shots at certain members and/or their songs, and it comes across as catty.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible story, brilliantly told!
Dreams is a must-read for any Fleetwood Mac fan, whether you’ve followed them for years or, like me, have only discovered their music more recently.
The sheer amount of information provided is incredible; in fact, if it wasn’t so skilfully written, it could almost risk becoming overwhelming in places (due to the complex nature of FM). Thankfully, each tiny detail has been expertly and meticulously weaved into the fabric of the story, allowing it to flow smoothly from one chapter to the next. I think you could read it 10 times and still pick up something new each time!
The other aspect I love is the brilliant (and refreshing) use of short chapters. This makes it delightfully easy to binge-read and simple to navigate if you want to go back over anything.
All in all, it’s a fascinating insight into one of the most diverse bands of all time. Whether you want to increase your own FM knowledge or you need a thoughtful gift idea for someone who loves music, you will not be disappointed with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good Fleetwood Mac book - at last.
It's long past time we got a good book about Fleetwood Mac. With their huge long standing popularity, and complex personal history, one would have thought this would have happened a long time ago.
I thought Mick Fleetwood's book a real disappointment, to put it mildly, and the one by Lindsey's ex-girlfriend only spanned her time in that relationship and not really about the music.
Mark Blake takes an interesting approach, dealing with each member, or release, at a time rather than begin with the Blues Breakers and end with Christine's passing. I found this odd at first, each chapter having its own individual time span. A bit "cut and paste" maybe. But it works, and I really enjoyed it.
I still think the definitive Fleetwood Mac book hasn't yet come along. But in the meantime, this will do nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different Approach
Dreams is different from other music biographies I’ve read - - shorter chapters, funny anecdotes and profiles of the musicians, even the ones i had never heard of before now. But by the end i had learned so much without even realising it. Also made me play Tusk again. I don't quite share the writer’s enthusiasm but it’s better than i remembered. *****

5.0 out of 5 stars Great History Book!
Short Chapters, but great detail and anecdotes....
