We know Charles Bukowski, who died in 1994, as a writer who didn’t shy away from recording life’s ugly parts. A new documentary by Matteo Borgardt, in which a young Italian reporter interviews Bukowski in his home in San Pedro, CA, shows us a man who doesn’t shy away from his own ugly parts, either. Arrogance, selfishness, addiction—all are on display, making the literary star less likable, perhaps, but also more real. —J.V.
