Yoko Ono presented her Mending Piece I for the first time in 1966, at a solo exhibition in London’s Indica Gallery. In a completely white space, viewers were invited to take a seat at a table and reassemble broken ceramic cups and pottery. Scissors, glue, twine, and tape were provided by the artist, and the finished pieces were displayed on a shelf. “Mend with wisdom, mend with love,” Ono said. “It will mend the earth at the same time.” The exhibition was a huge success and went on to tour the world. Now back in London for the first time in over 50 years, visitors are invited to stop in and do some mending, while reflecting on the state of the world since the work was first conceived. —E.C.
