A much-praised new voice in London’s hyphen-rich music scene, this British-Bahraini trumpeter-composer layers post-bop, electronica, and Arabic modes and meters in a confection some may find a tad too sweet for the six refractory women—from Rosa Parks to Malala Yousafzai—she celebrates here. For most, though, this rare live performance of Ahmed’s major statement should be a highlight of the seriously hip Gateshead Jazz (March 20–22). —E.E.
