DESCRIPTION:Sep 11\, 2026 - Jan 17\, 2027\nLike the endless polka-dots she
created\, Yayoi Kusama was a floating presence in the avant-garde movement
and in the art world overall. “I was betting everything on this and rai
sing my revolutionary banner against all of history\,” she wrote of her
trademark pattern. Born to a conservative Japanese family in 1929\, Kusama
began painting to reckon with hallucinations\, translating her obsessive
process of self-obliteration into hypnotic “infinity nets\,” paintings
filled with the tiny holes that crowded her mind. In 1965\, she made the
first of many mirrored Infinity Rooms\, spaces that invited viewers into h
er unique vision. “By continually reproducing the forms of things that t
errify me\,” she wrote\, “I am able to suppress the fear.” In the 19
70s\, however\, she checked herself into a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo.
It became her home\, and her creativity expanded. Kusama died last month o
n August 14. This retrospective in Amsterdam\, spanning seven decades\, is
now a posthumous tribute to her playful and exploratory career. It contai
ns new works created specifically for the show.
