Witch Hunt

Until
Hammer Museum / Los Angeles / Art

A neon sign by Yael Bartana blares “Patriarchy is history.” A photograph by Teresa Margolles frames a transgender woman resting in a room with magenta walls, in a shelter in Juárez, Mexico. Candice Breitz provokes with a video installation (and lines like “A Blow Job Is Better Than No Job”) that looks at the dangers of sex work. In this exhibition, 16 female artists from 13 countries fuse critical feminist perspectives with artistic vision, and in the process tell powerful stories. Artists on the roster include Leonor Antunes, Shu Lea Cheang, Minerva Cuevas, Bouchra Khalili, Laura Lima, Otobong Nkanga, and Okwui Okpokwasili. —E.C.
