DESCRIPTION:Jul 3 - Oct 18\, 2026\nWinslow Homer (1836–1910) is known for
his paintings of the Maine coast\, the sea\, and solitary figures braced
against stormy weather. But for a concentrated period in the 1880s he turn
ed to etching\, revisiting his celebrated subjects in a medium that demand
ed a different kind of attention. The results are among the least-known wo
rks of his career and among the most technically ambitious. The Portland M
useum of Art\, which stewards Homer’s studio on the Maine coast and hold
s a landmark collection of his work\, is now presenting these rare prints
in dialogue with related paintings\, drawings\, and proofs. It’s the fir
st comprehensive exhibition of Homer’s etchings ever staged.
