Colonialism, apartheid, war—these are the subjects of the U.S. museum premiere of “KABOOM!,” a huge 2018 multimedia installation by the multifaceted artist William Kentridge. A recent I.C.A. acquisition, the installation tells the story of the African porters, two million strong, who were used by the British, French, and Germans in W.W. I, basically carrying the war on their backs. Pointing the finger at injustice, Kentridge takes no prisoners. —L.J.
