DESCRIPTION:Oct 24\, 2026 - May 3\, 2027\nWilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912–2
 004) arrived in St Ives in 1940\, joining a circle of artists—Barbara He
pworth\, Ben Nicholson\, and Peter Lanyon among them—who had made the Co
rnish town a center of British modernism. She would remain there for the n
ext 60 years\, drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape while en
dlessly experimenting with color and form. A visit to Switzerland’s Grin
delwald Glacier in 1949 proved decisive. Fascinated by the shifting patter
ns of ice and light\, she began a series of paintings that marked a depart
ure from her earlier work. Now\, Tate St Ives is presenting the largest re
trospective of Barns-Graham’s career to date\, bringing together more th
an 170 paintings\, drawings\, and archival materials\, and moving from her
early landscapes to the brilliantly colored “Scorpio” paintings of he
 r final years.
