A few years ago in South Africa, student protests alerted university faculties to the institutional racism that was embedded in the university status quo. For example, in 2016, at the University of Cape Town, 79.1% of the art department’s collection was composed of artwork by white artists. Since then, the university has purchased pieces by 22 artists who more accurately represent South Africa’s emerging talent. “We’ve come to take you home #1,” an exhibition of these new works, celebrates the shifting landscape that comes with cultural inclusion. —E.C.
