The Federal Palace / Lagos / Art

For his new solo exhibition, the Nigerian artist Gbolahan Ayoola went big. He started his new series of large-scale paintings at the beginning of the pandemic—in April 2020—and painted in response to the growing social and political crisis. Combining the figurative and the abstract, Ayoola’s work draws on his own dreams and memories of racial tensions, as well as the history of Nigerian culture. Ayoola’s series is on view at Nigeria’s four-day international art fair Art X Lagos, which is back in-person after a coronavirus hiatus. For those unable to walk the actual exhibition, you can peruse it digitally on the fair’s Web site, through November 21. —J.D.
