Voyage Vers l’Espoir, by Christian Jost

Grand Théâtre de Genève / Geneva / Stage

Vision statement from the composer Christian Jost: “I am permanently on the search for the magic moment and can only achieve this through a complex and differentiated ratio between structure, form and tone.” In a recent experiment, he “recomposed” Schumann’s song cycle Dichterliebe, stitching the 16 separate miniatures into a continuous fresco. This time out, Jost’s inspiration is the Swiss filmmaker Xavier Koller’s shattering Journey of Hope, which in 1991 won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. A Kurdish family from Turkey risks all to start over in Switzerland, a land they know only from a picture postcard. —M.G.
