The Sistine Chapel. The Vatican. The Niccoline Chapel. These venerated spaces of spiritual transport came into being during the Italian Renaissance. Commissioned by various great popes of the 1500s, artists such as Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, and, most famous of all, Michelangelo have adorned these halls and domes with magnificent affreschi, changing the course of Western art. Visiting the Musei Vaticani at this moment in time is not possible, but you can stroll through these spaces virtually, zooming into the vaults of Michelangelo’s Last Judgement, while wondering what he would paint if he were here today? —E.C.
