Vanessa German speaks of her creative process as “surrender[ing] myself to the objects that call up to me.” In this exhibition, among those objects are heroes Venus and Serena Williams, star tennis players and icons of African-American female empowerment. In her signature way, German creates vibrant sculptural homages to the sisters. Her surreal assemblages, many quite large, are richly symbolic. —E.C.
