Urban Indian: Native New York Now

Museum of the City of New York / New York / Art

“The ancient people perceived the world and themselves within that world as part of an ancient continuous story composed of innumerable bundles of other stories,” writes the Native American novelist, Leslie Marmon Silko. Mirroring this tradition, “Urban Indian” tells a single story that is woven together from many: contemporary artworks and mementos illustrate the diversity of tribal heritages within the unified Native community in New York. The exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of American Indian Community House, a non-profit dedicated to promoting native culture in New York. —C.J.F.
