The subtitle of this exhibition is taken from Hilda Hilst’s 1984 collection of poems, Poemas Malditos, Gozosos e Devotos. “Damed, Orgasmic and Devoted” speaks to artist Rivane Neuenschwander’s own feelings about her native Brazil—a country marked by the colonial yoke of the past, fetishized as exotic, and ruled by religion. In the tapestries, paintings, drawings, and postcards that make up this exhibition, palm trees and vivid colors are a backdrop to nightmarish scenes. —E.C.
