Tom Uttech was born in Merrill, Wisconsin, in 1942. He is an artist of the woods and the creatures that live in them. But he’s also something of a mystic, drawn to dusk and dawn, intent on catching the sentient silence of Northern American landscapes. Paintings that show the mirror reflection of a wood in a lake are like Op art abstractions. Images of birds in migration are a beguiling confetti of species. The color palette, whether hot or cold, glows warm-blooded. Oh to own a Uttech painting of an owl. —L.J.
