One of the few Chinese-American artists that became popular in the 1980s, Tishan Hsu’s painted sculptural works have a visionary quality. He created objects that were ergonomic before such design even became popular. “Philosophically, I was interested in this technological context that I had no idea about,” says Hsu. “Conceptually, I was always interested in the object, and the change in our understanding of the object.” This is his first solo show in the U.S. —E.C.
