Thomas Struth

Guggenheim / Bilbao / Art

One of Thomas Struth’s best known series, “Museum Photographs”—in which visitors to museums are captured admiring eternally hanging works of art—is also the most telling of his process. Inspired by Gerhard Richter, this German photographer likens his practice to painting, “[When] I am taking a photograph, I am conscious that I am constructing images rather than taking snapshots.” Now, the largest showing of Struth’s career to date—arriving in Bilbao after opening in Munich—offers an extensive display of his photographs, beginning with several never-before-exhibited early works. —J.V.
