Brice Marden’s daughter once asked him if there was a moment when he knew he wanted to be an artist. He answered, “Falling asleep up in the woods in Briarcliff.” Marden’s artistic origin story presages the themes that have engaged him as an abstract painter: landscape, environment, architecture. Featuring six series of drawings from across Marden’s career—including “The Seasons” and “Cold Mountain”—this exhibition highlights his interest in paper as place, or, as he has said, “as spaces” where he can experiment with ideas. —C.J.F.
