“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again,” Jack Kerouac writes in On the Road, “we had longer ways to go.” The Ephrussi family, a Jewish banking dynasty once as rich as the Rothschilds, originated in Russia, settled in Europe, and then scattered during the Nazi regime. The family’s long way over many generations is traced through art and objects it once owned, and the stories carried within them. —J.V.
