The Disquieted Muses: When the Biennale Meets History

Giardini della Biennale / Venice / Music / Art / Stage

This year marks La Biennale di Venezia’s 125th anniversary. To celebrate, the artistic directors of the foundation’s six departments are coming together—for the first time—to curate an exhibition that combines art, cinema, dance, music, theater, and architecture. In the Central Pavilion, the retrospective will trace through the Biennale’s hallmark moments by historical period: Fascism to the Cold War, the postwar years to 60s unrest, postmodernism to today. All will illustrate how the arts and the Biennale have intersected with major political events and cultural shifts. Indeed, it is the work of artists, expressing what others refuse to see or hear, that is so often prophetic. —E.C.
