Did you know that spider silk is often five times stronger than steel? And that a strand of it long enough to encircle the earth would weigh less than 18 ounces? The miraculous silk of spiders, and the exquisite floating island that is the spider’s web, have long inspired designers, artists, and engineers. This exhibition looks at the results of that fascination. —L.J.
