A Monthly Culture Matrix For the Cosmopolitan Traveler

Sternenhoch, by Ivan Acher

National Theatre / Prague / Music / Stage

Blink, and you’ll miss it. Despite some favorable press last season, two of four performances originally announced this season have been canceled. A macabre tour de force adapted from the prose of Kafka’s contemporary Ladislav Klíma, Sternhoch acquaints us with a prince haunted by the ghost (or is it the cadaver?) of a young woman he has subjected to depravities beyond imagining. The Nutcracker this isn’t. Sung in Esperanto. Feliĉan Kristnaskon! (That’s “Merry Christmas!” to you.) —M.G.
