Having grown up in southeastern Pennsylvania, Sterling Ruby is as influenced by Amish quilt-making as he is by the pressured energies of contemporary culture. He courts controversy with violent color—especially blood or “ruby” red—and sometimes terrifying imagery. Yet he also works in fashion. Collaborating with Raf Simons at Christian Dior, in 2012, he produced warp-printed fabrics that were hauntingly beautiful color studies. This exhibition features Ruby’s work in a range of mediums, including ceramics, painting, drawing, and installations. —L.J.
