Squid Game

Streaming on Netflix / Film & TV

Anyone who says that playground games are only for children hasn’t watched Netflix’s Squid Game. The South Korean drama (the first to ever top the weekly most-watched list globally on Netflix) is equal parts Hunger Games and Truman Show, pitting some 400 contestants against each other as they compete in a series of juvenile parlor games with a deadly twist. At stake is an ungodly sum of cash, but the road to it is paved with intrigue, chaos, and gratuitous violence. From acclaimed South Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series blends comedy with social commentary, taking a critical look at human nature, capitalism, and, of course, our obsession with reality television. —Jacob Robbins
