 ntana published his landmark “Manifesto Blanco” in 1946\, laying the f
 oundation for the integration of art and science. “I do not want to make
  a painting\,” he said. “I want to open up space … create a new dime
 nsion\, tie in the cosmos as it endlessly expands beyond the confining pla
 ne of the picture.” And he did. Fontana dismantled traditional norms wit
 h his signature slashed canvases\, which brought mysteries of entrance and
  escape to the flat surface. As his career continued\, the cuts became mor
 e precise and formal\, redefining the relationship between art and space. 
 A new exhibition chronicles Fontana’s canvas-cutting practice\, showcasi
 ng Spatialism as a means of infinite possibility.
