Sean Scully recalls the sensual properties of a place or moment and revisits it with paint or through construction. He once said, “My job is to return abstraction to the people: in a sense, to popularize it without lowering the bar, which is a lot easier said than done.” This exhibition sees Scully inhabiting the entire museum with site-specific works dedicated to its namesake, the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. A selection of paintings, sculpture, and drawings fill the gallery spaces, and out front two monumental creations, one in black Carrara marble, grace the museum square. —E.C.
