Since the days of the enterprising Anna Pavlova, ballerinas—usually Russian—have been putting together their own programs of short works. In recent years Diana Vishneva and Natalia Osipova have starred in their own evenings. And the New York City Ballet ballerina Sara Mearns has been actively experimenting, dancing the lead role in Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes, performing Narcissus by Isadora Duncan, and even taking on a speaking role (charmingly) in 2019’s Encores! production of I Married an Angel (she was the angel). Now Mearns is starring in her own evening at the Joyce. Repertory includes works by Beth Gill, Jodi Melnick, Guillaume Côté, and others. —L.J.
