“I only paint when I am moved,” says Rose Wylie of what impels her to bring brush to canvas. “It is something that I see and I think that the excitement of what I’ve seen should be communicated or it should be in the painting that I make.” It can be a shape in her garden, a picture in a book, a scene in a movie. Wylie works on big canvases, monumentally, her colorful images somewhat preschool, rudimentary in their drawing, and therefore iconic. Words and phrases add complexity, leaving the viewer to ponder where exactly, between “am” and “was,” they are. —L.J.
