Revolusi! Indonesia Independent

Rijksmuseum / Amsterdam / Art

In Indonesia, between 1945 and 1949, the native people were at war with Dutch colonizers. The people prevailed, bloodshed paving the way to Indonesia’s independence on August 17, 1949. The Southeast Asian nation was an inspiration to other nations, who pursued independence in subsequent decades. Two hundred objects from those four monumental years—including seven works on loan from the Presidential Palace—are presented in this exhibition. The tales of 20 individuals from various political and social backgrounds are threaded through the show, which is a first on this subject. —E.C.
