Rembrandt’s 1634 portrait, Scholar in His Study, features an elderly man dressed in an embroidered velvet robe, seated at a table full of books. He is handling a large manuscript, yet looks towards the painter (and us) with an air of surprise, his eyes searching. The dark palette creates an atmosphere of depth, and the pyramidal shape of the scholar’s draped body points upward to the enlightenment of his mind. On the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death, this exhibition focuses on scholarship, cognition, and learning. Works from Rembrandt and his students are on display. —E.C.
