A Monthly Culture Matrix For the Cosmopolitan Traveler

Raúl de Nieves

Institute of Contemporary Art / Boston / Art

“That’s what my work is about,” Raul de Nieves once told Art21. “It’s like seeing the facets of happiness and sadness all in one place.” The installation artist often combines vibrant stained-glass murals and adorned figures in his exhibitions. The stained glass is reminiscent of church windows, while the figures—encrusted with sequins, beads, pearls, tassels, fringe—are inspired by theatrical costume from around the world. Like all good theater, these figurative sculptures animate the space and express a full spectrum of emotion, especially joy. —E.C.
