How did modern art appear on the Canadian West Coast? Much of the credit goes to artist Emily Carr and her female contemporaries, all of whom boldly challenged traditional painting in the early 20th century. Carr is remembered for her singularly powerful, slightly surrealist depictions of Canadian forests, which she painted in swooping swaths of dark, earthy color—deep greens and blues. This show displays her works alongside those of female compatriots. —E.C.
