The rise and proliferation of the Japanese Battle Royale combat video game, Fortnite, attests to the power of games in popular culture, especially among the younger generations. Frenzied players spend thousands of dollars on their avatars, providing their virtual selves with everything from designer outfits to coins and high calibre weapons. Interactive stories, immersive environments, and media installations tell the tale. —E.C.
